Description / Special Requirements A domestic style laundry / utility room for activities of daily living (ADL) independence assessments and rehabilitation training for patients of varying levels of physical and cognitive ability. In this space patients will be assessed and trained in washing, drying and ironing of personal clothing. The room will include benches, storage at various heights, laundry sink, domestic washing machine, dryer and ironing facilities. Adequate space is required to enable patients, with or without assistive mobility devices, to move around the space with a therapist. As with all rehabilitation spaces the design of this space will depend on the service plan and expected case mix of the facility and appliances suitable for that expected case load should be chosen. A front loading washing machine is often recommended and it may be placed on a plinth to increase accessibility and reduce the need for patients to bend down. Where ever possible, patients should re-learn, practice and be assessed in their own homes. Ideally, purpose built facilities should only be used for more complex tasks, those requiring equipment that is not yet available in the home, and to assess a patient's readiness to return home where further rehabilitation will take place. Therefore, the room furnishings will be domestic in style and scale to mimic home conditions with a slight increase in the room size to accommodate additional equipment and alternative furniture items (e.g. an alternative free-standing, adjustable height ironing board may be provided in addition to the wall mounted board to suit a wider variety of patients).
